A structural overview of February 6, 2023 Kahramanmaraş, Türkiye, earthquakes (M7.7 and M7.6)

Date:  April 12, 2023

Presenter: Dr. Alemdar Bayraktar, University of British Columbia

On February 6th, 2023, Türkiye experienced two devastating earthquakes with magnitudes of M7.7 and M7.6 within nine hours that struck the southern region including eleven populated cities. The main shocks also caused many powerful aftershocks. These events have caused widespread damage to the built environment and claimed thousands of lives in southern Türkiye and northwestern Syria. This webinar will cover a comprehensive overview of the research and observation findings on the historical seismicity of the earthquake region, main and aftershocks of the earthquakes, ground motion characteristics, surface fault ruptures, liquefaction, and performance of RC buildings, historical masonry structures, bridges, highways and railways, tunnels, dams and port during the earthquakes, and lessons learned from these events.
